Jung Lim-Dong Church [Á׸²µ¿ ¼º´ç]


The catholic religion had a late start in the Kangwon province north-eastern region
there ws little persecution in the days of the martyrs.however,during the korean war(1950-1953) the church suffered heavely and many priests,religious and laity were killed by the north korean communist.
Within the church grounds of ChunChun's sacred heart cathedral in this church,a section of the city formly called YakSa-Ri,there are the graves of three priests martyred in the korean war.


Fathers patrick Reilly,Anthony Collier and James McGinn.
Monsignor Thomas F Quinlan,the former ordinary of ChunChon,survived 4 years in a concentration camp before returning to his mission.
After the war, he was appointed Bishop of ChunChon and also served from 1953 to 1957 as Regent at the Holy See's Apostolic Nuncio in Seoul.

Father Timothy Yi Kwang-Jae killed during the korean war.He was a pastor of St.Therese parish there for 12 years.
He captured by the north korean communists and subsequently executed in Won San on Oct 09,1950.
his personal motto,The words of the gospel ;
" A good shepherd gives his life for his sheep"
Before he martyred, he risked death on many occasions in order to aid other priests and laity to escape.In the end,he was apprehended and killed.


KuRaMi Village [±¸¶ó¹Ì ¸¶À»]


Stephen Sim was martyred here, a catholic intellectual and member of the Sim Chong- Song family who had resided in the village for many years.
He had been baptized as a youth and was well versed in the confucian classics.
In May 1868,Stephen Sim was arrested by police from seoul while reciting poetry with friends at a shaded community kiosk near the village and martyred in the prison.


PungSuWon Church [dz¼ö¿ø ¼º´ç]


This is a remote village in the Chi Ak Mountain district of Hoensung county.
It was the first of several villages formed by catholic refugees.They were fleeing the terror of the persecution of 1866 and the efforts of a political firestorm which raged in 1871,after intrusion of an American naval unit on korean territory.
Sacred heart parish which estabilished in 1888, It is  the first parish in KangWon province.It is renowned for its annual eucharistics procession which,except for the war years,has been held continously for 65 years.
The parish has contributed numerous vocations to the church including 31 priests.Truly it can be called a seed bed of christianity here.
