Sanjong-Dong Church [»êÁ¤µ¿ ¼º´ç]
GwangJu was estabilished as an archdiocese,its cathedral parish
was located as SanJong-Dong in MokPo,on a hill overlooking the port.
During the korean war(1950-1953) three missionary priests were captured
here by north korean soldiers and later executed,presumbly at Mok-Dong
Convent in TaeJeon.
They were the perfect apostolic of GwangJu,monsignor Patrict Brennan and
two Irish priests,Father Thomas Cussack,Pastor of Sanjong-Dong parish
and the assistant Pastor,Father John O'Brien
KokSung [°î ¼º]
The incident related here took place at a site close to the present catholic
parish of KokSung in south Jeolla province.
In 1827,a feast was hled to celebrate the opening of a new pottery kiln
at TangGoGae(hilltop).
Some 240 catholics were held captive in a prison at JeonJu. Among them
,many were martyred including Andrew Kim Do-Myung and Jung Dae-Dong .
KangJin [° Áø]
John Baptist Jung Yak-yong was a member of the KangHakHoe(Study group)
which estabilished the catholic Church in 1779. He also was
known as the distinguished SilHak Scholar
In 1801,The scholar was forced into exile in here.
He stayed here in KangJin for 18 years shut off from the world.
