Banju-Gol [¹ÝÁÖ°ñ]


Here is the ManSu-Dong in Incheon-city,It had been the grave site of Peter Yi Sung-Hun ,the first korean catholic,who was baptized in Peking in 1784.
At the age of 24,he was appointed a district magistrate.He married the sister of John Baptist Jung Yak-yong.
When the KangHak Hoe ws held at ChonJin Am,Yi Sung-Hun was one of the participants.


It led to the eatabilishment of the catholic church.At the suggestion of Yi Byok ,he traveled to Peking to find out more about the catholic religion.
He was able to do this by accompanying his father,who was a senior member of the annual korean delegation sent to the Chinese capital.


On Feb 24,1784 Yi Sung-Hun was baptized in peking, baptismal name Peter.
With return fof Peter Yi,the ritual and religious truth of catholicism were more readily understand through reference to material which he had brought back.
The center of activity moved from Chon Jin Am to Myung Ye Bang in seoul(now here is a Cathedral stands)


In 1801, Peter Yi and other leaders of the church,like Augustine Jung Yak-Jong Thomas  Choi Pil-Gong and John Choi Chang-Hyun were beheaded outside the small west gate.
Peter Yi was later buried in the family burial ground at here in BanJu-Gol.


KapGotDon-Dae [°©°÷µ·´ë]


This located at kangHwaDo Island near Incheon-city west coast.
In 1866,The regent TaeWonGun ws furious about intrusion of the western powers.He blamed skirmishes with French forces in 1866 and later with the American in 1871 on a conspiracy between the west and christians in Korea
It gave him ample excuse to attack the catholic church in six years of bloody persecution.
At the Regent's command,as edict was issued;
"It is because of the christians that the barbarians come here to this point; It is because of them that the waters of our river have been polluted by vessels from the west.Their blood must wash away this stain"
Here six brothers including John In-Seo Choi were martyred on the beach in 1866 and 1868.


Nam Yang [³² ¾ç]


This is 20 KM from the city of Suwon,near the western sea.It has a memorialmartyrs,shrine to those christians who witnessed faith here.
During the period of persecutions,NamYang was a military post governed by a high ranking civil administrator. Among the martyrs of NamYang were Philip Kim and his wife Maria Pak,Pilip Jung and Thomas Hong-Seo Kim


Kat DungYi [°« µîÀÌ]


This village also called Wang Rim and is not far from NamYang.It was the birth place of Andrew Han who died a martyr in seoul in 1871.
It has a catholic tradition that dates back 150 years and has been a seed-bed for vocations to the priesthood.
some 40 priests have come from this area.
Bishop Imbert himself evangelized the mission station in 1839
later,the christian villages spread throughout the valley of TaeYang mountain behind right here and were nemerous enough to form a parish by the end of the Joseoni Dynasty.
Because of its long association with the faith,the Diocese of Suwon chose this area to estabilish its new regional seminary,in commemoration of the 200th Anniversary(1984) of the estabilishment of the church in Korea.


Suri-San [¼ö¸®»ê]


Saint Francis Kyong-HwanChoi,father of the second korean priest Father Thomas Yang-Up Choi,is burried in a valley of Suri-San,near AnYang. The saint's grave is located in front of a village variously called DamBae-Gol(Tobacco village)
During the Gihae persecution of 1839,Francis Kyong-Hwan Choi was arrested with his family.he died in prison.
His wife,Maria Sung-Rye Yi cradled her youngest son in her arms as he died of detarvation in the same place.
She herself was taken to TangKogae(hilltop) in seoul and beheaded.Four other sons became beggars and reached exiles.
His son korean second priest Yang-Up Choi returned to his home land ten years later after his father martyred and he could knelt before his father's grave.
