Evangelization on Jeju Island was so difficult.Geographically,This Island
is so isolated from the korean peninsula.
Evangelization here in Jeju had to wait for arrival of French missionaries. However,
In
1901 an unprecedented incident took place, ten years after religious freedom
was granted and two years after the arrival of the priests. It Was an outburst
of Xenophobic rage called the Jeju Massare , 700 catholics were slaughtered
in 20 days by the local peoples
The local people of the Island were exclusive and superstitious. They had
an anti-government feeling because of heavy taxation. The local officials
and japanese fish man used this feeling in persecuting the catholics.
Once the catholic cut down the tree worshipped by the local people, but
that didn't cause problems.
The real proble, erupted when a man of the governor of District killed
a catholic and a man called Oh Shin-Nak connected with the killing and killed
himself due to his guilty conscience.
The governor,Chae Ku-Seok ,imputed the responsibility to the catholics.
With the support of the governor's men and the japanese fish men,the panic-stricken
people exploded. They surrounded the Jeju Cattle and killed every catholics
they met
At that time there were 2 French missionaries and a Korean priests, Father
Kim Won-Yong
Although the catholic could have run away, but they stayed inside the castle
in order to protest their faith and protect the priests.
The rioting people used rifles and bayonet supplied by the japanese. The
government officials tried to pacify the people but they were not successful. The
dead bodies of the catholics are buried in the suburb of Jeju -City
Almost 700 catholics must have been massacred, but there are only about
ten graves and two monuments.
Chu ja Island [ÃßÀÚµµ]
During the ShinYu persecution of 1801,Mary Jung widow of Alexander Hwang Sa-Young
who was banished with her small son to Mosul Po port in Cheju Island. As
the skiff neared herein Chu Ja Island
where was too tiny to have any resident police, the young mother bribed
the boatman with her ring and ornaments to stop for a brief interval.
Distraught with fear for the child's safety, she left him and continued
on to exile. She knew this was the one way to save her son,the only offspring
of the martyred Alexander Hwang Sa-Young from certain death on Jeju Island.
Fortunately, the crying baby Hwang Kyong-heon was found by the wife of
fishermen named Oh.She identified the child from the collar of his coat
on which the name had been stitched.
The fisherman and his wife accepted him as their own child and grew to manhood
as a son of the family. Because of this fact, even today people on Chu
Ja Island ,with the Sur Name Oh do not intermarry with the Hwang Clan, because
of above mentioned history gives them a hint that possibility of the same family.
