During the early days of persecutions, the forefather of the our catholics's

for their live hood.

all their property
The pottery making not only helped with their live hood but also helped
them in spreading the faith, pretending to be pottery vendors.
It was also an occasion for finding out information about the church and
their separated families. The pottery-kilns were ideal places to hold religious
services secretly.
The first historic incident to take place in Baeron was in 1801.

There were ten seminarians at first, with a rector,Father Pourthie and
a Professor Father Petitnicolas. The two French priests taught the students
Latin and western learning.
Jang Nak-So taught Chineses literature who was a house owner.
Their suffering was enormous because of the unsanitary living conditions.
After the seminary was established Bishop Berneux, with the permission
of the Holy See,consecrated Father Daveluy as his auxiliary Bishop in
the same year.
Bishop Daveluy was placed in charge of printing catechism books and collecting
historical facts of the martyred.
The French priests in Baeron,Besides their teaching duties, made great
effort in editing the first korean-French Dictionary, initiated by Bishop
Daveluy.
In the meantime, the great persecution of 1866 started.Bishop Berneux and
five french priests in seoul as well as two French priests and Nak-so
Chang in Baeron were all martyred.
As a result,The seminary was closed after ten years of operation and the
seminarians were all dispersed and the korea-french Dictionary, the korean
grammar books and book on medicinal herbs of the region were all burnt
by the ignorant policeman.
Before the seminary was closed.Father yang-up Choi, the second korean priest, who
had studied in Macau with Father Tae-Gon Kim,was about to die during his
mission trip in MunKyong,he received the last rites from Father Pourthie, the
French priest, who came all the way from Baeron, and died in the same day.
