Jeol Du San a small rocky mountain beside the Han River, this place was a ferry landing
called "Yang Hwa Jin" during the Joseon Dynasty.Since the Regent
Dae Won Gun used this hill as an execution ground, it became a historic
place proving the faith of the korean christians.
During the cruel Byong In persecution of 1866,they used to behead the
catholics on the top of the hill and throw their corpses into the Han
River.
About 8,000 of catholics had been executed in this way for about 2 years.
After the terrible calamity, people began to call the mountain here "Jeol
Du San ' which means Cut-off Head Mountain in english.
But,unfortunately,we know only 31 of the martyrs, for most of them were
killed without any form of trial and we have no public record about them.
The memorial of Jeol Du San was erected in 1966 on the occasion of 100th
anniversary of the Byong In persecution of 1866.

The grave of Julia
Oda and her life
Augustine Goshini Yukinaga was an army general
during the war between Korea and Japan which was initiated by Toyotomi
Hideyoshi in 1592.
The general took a 4-year-old looking korean orphan under his care and
sent her to be raised by his wife,Justina in Japan. Thus Julia was educated
and grew in faith as a foreigner.
In 1600, Hideyoshi was engaged in a power struggle with Tokygawa Ieyasu
and lost, and as a result, his staff general,General Yukinaga was executed.
Following this event, being attracted to Julia's beauty and intelligence,Ieyasu
took her as a mistress,But Julia made firm her conviction to denounce
the plush life her new situation would bring and to follow the ways of
the Lord;
"If Ieyasu was to send for me to come to his bedroom chamberlike
he does with the other mistress,I would experience no difficulty evading
the situation.if this was to be an impossible task,I would rather welcome
death"
As the persecution to the catholic grew fierce in 1611,Ieyasu became more
persistent in harnessing Julia's heart, but she displayed even a stronger
conviction in being faithful to her Lord, and ultimately,Julia was exiled
to Ohohshima on Apr 20,1612.She was later transferred to Nieeshima and
then to Gochushima, a beautiful Island about 200 KM from Tokyo.
The reason for her being moved about was that wherever her went, peoples
were moved by her charisma and they converted to Catholicism, and the local
government authorities kept reporting these events to the central government.
After living a life of joyful prayer and teaching the handful of inhabitants
at Gochushima Christ's love and how to read and write,Julia died a natural
death around 1651.
The Islanders have embraced Julia as their guardian angel for some 330
years, and fresh flowers are always plated around her uniquely Korean tomb
monument.
